Neighborhood Design Lab Case Studies

One of the many programs offered by the New York City Department of Small Business (NYCDSB) is the Neighborhood Design Lab grant. With this grant, qualifying Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) work with the World Studio Foundation, a leading design and branding agency, on an initiative that supports the long-term vision for the community.

We interviewed the project coordinators, Director of the NYCDSB and World Studio Foundation founder, Mark Randall, to write case studies documenting the goals, experiences and outcomes of four Neighborhood Design Lab initiatives. Each project was as unique as the neighborhood it serves and all were seeking to improve the quality of life for the people who live there.

5 BOROUGHS, 59 COMMUNITY DISTRICTS & 100’s OF NEIGHBORHOODS

A neighborhood’s commercial district reflects the cultural fabric of its inhabitants, defines the perception of place, and helps shape the character of the community. In typical New York fashion, our neighborhoods are as diverse as the people who populate them. Some span a few blocks, others a few miles, but each has a character all its own. From East Harlem to Marble Hill and Port Richmond to Coney Island, these neighborhoods may have flavors of a distant place but they are all uniquely New York.
